Tahoe Tribe Series—Ceci Chourre, The Puzzle Solver

The Tahoe Tribe blog series features a group of women that are dedicated to supporting success in each other’s personal and professional lives. Each and every woman is remarkable in their own way, offering unique—and absolutely invaluable— contributions to each other and to the WWA movement as a whole.

As a unit and as individuals, these ladies both redefine and exemplify the true meanings of support, love, sisterhood, and friendship. In short, Walking With America simply would not be possible without them!

As the Puzzle Solver, Ceci excels at seeing an entire project from the top down and identifying exactly what needs to be done. In the months to come, she will continue to send her support and lend an expert hand at delegating and planning as Sheryl treks across the country.

Eighteen years ago, Ceci “followed her bliss” and left the city to embrace the mountains, outdoor living, WWA, and the Tahoe community with open arms. As she says, “Having really healthy, open friendships—that has been amazing!”

What does Walking With America mean to you?

Ultimately, Walking With America is about bringing people together to get out and reap the health, social, and community benefits of getting together and walking. We do a ton of that in Tahoe—it’s just built into our community fabric! We walk out of the door when we are done with work, we get out, and we prioritize coming together as a community in an outdoor or philanthropic way.

In a way, Walking With America takes that unique culture across the United States, showing people exactly how we do it in Tahoe— It’s a Forrest Gump-esque walk that promotes the national movement of movement!

How would you describe the Tahoe Tribe to someone you just met? What does the Tahoe Tribe mean to you?

It’s a group of independent and successful women who have chosen to come together and support each other in our goal-setting and in our lives that we have dreamed out. We have found that a group of accomplished women can be incredibly successful with that!

How do you stay happy & healthy each day?

As someone who manages chronic fatigue and depression, part of my management repertoire is being in the outdoors—hence my reason to move to the mountains, walk, and spend time with other people that are like-minded.

The idea of using walking to help chronic fatigue and stave off depression is a huge thing that could be highlighted for people across the United States.

This year, I’m learning how to cook nutritionally. I’m also a lifelong learner, and I love being active in and supporting my community—that’s what WWA is all about! I love inspiring others to get out and be in nature, especially anything that is freshwater oriented.

Any tips for those who are curious about living happier, healthier lives?

There’s nothing that you will lose by getting out and doing it—all you will do is gain something that will benefit you emotionally, physically, and socially. It will increase your productivity, your personal enjoyment, your projects, and even your family and work relationships. Not to mention, getting out and being in nature is just simply fun!

Tahoe Tribe Series—Jennifer Fuller, The Trainer

The Tahoe Tribe blog series features a group of women that are dedicated to supporting success in each other’s personal and professional lives. Each and every woman is remarkable in their own way, offering unique—and absolutely invaluable— contributions to each other and to the WWA movement as a whole.

As a unit and as individuals, these ladies both redefine and exemplify the true meanings of support, love, sisterhood, and friendship. In short, Walking With America simply would not be possible without them!

As “The Trainer,” Jennifer has been using her role as a certified nutritionist and personal trainer to ensure that Sheryl is physically prepared leading up to the walk. Physical training, good eating habits, and a stress-free outlook are all key elements to the success of Walking With America, both as a movement and as a six-month journey.

While Sheryl is on the road, Jennifer will be providing ample support and encouragement. From advice on nutritional needs, motivational phone calls, and everything in-between, she will be ready and waiting to lend her training expertise.

With proper nutrition and physical training as a foundation, there is no limit to what Walking With America can accomplish—as Jennifer says, “Let’s push that stroller up a mountain!”

What does Walking With America mean to you?

As a health coach, I realize that there is a pandemic of inactivity that is leading to our health crisis in America. The Walking With America concept is great, as it is essential to getting people out and moving at a basic and foundational level.

Ultimately, Walking With America is a campaign to celebrate life, live happier, and encourage people to get moving!

How would you describe the Tahoe Tribe to someone you just met?

A diverse group of women whom have come together from varied backgrounds, all focused on supporting each other to set goals and to achieve them when they wouldn’t otherwise have been able to.

How do you stay happy & healthy each day?

I have had a personal battle with my own health. I know what it is like to face death and I never want to look back! Each day, I live my life to the fullest and choose a healthy lifestyle. I have chosen to change careers and help others also, so they too can learn how to live a healthy lifestyle.

Any tips for those who are curious about living happier, healthier lives?

  • Daily gratitude
  • Time with nature
  • Time connecting with family and friends

Tahoe Tribe Series—Laurie Flesher, The Tracker

The Tahoe Tribe blog series features a group of women that are dedicated to supporting success in each other’s personal and professional lives. Each and every woman is remarkable in their own way, offering unique—and absolutely invaluable— contributions to each other and to the WWA movement as a whole.

As a unit and as individuals, these ladies both redefine and exemplify the true meanings of support, love, sisterhood, and friendship. In short, Walking With America simply would not be possible without them!

As “The Tracker,” Laurie is ready and waiting to help Sheryl with anything that she may need, including recording her progress and matching her mileage. If Sheryl walks 10 miles in a day, you can bet that Laurie is going to walk 10 miles too, showing love and support from afar.

Laurie is also planning to meet Sheryl for a walk and an H3 (Healthy Happy Hour) event during her trek across America. As she says, “Sheryl is an inspiration! She is the Dreamer, and this is a big dream! I am happy if I can provide support to her in any way.”

What does Walking With America mean to you?

Sheryl is walking across America to inspire others to be in the community and in the great outdoors, getting people out exercising—and ultimately, to be healthier, happier, and more connected to the communities around them, [which are] all things that speak to me about the WWA movement!

How would you describe the Tahoe Tribe to someone you just met?

The Tahoe Tribe is a group of not-necessarily- like-minded women who try to identify personal goals and aspirations and work together to help each other achieve their individual goals.

Some might be losing weight, some might be starting a business, and some might be just getting their act together! All the women inspire and encourage each other to achieve whatever goal is important to each person.

What does the Tahoe Tribe mean to you?

The love and care shown for each person in the Tribe by the rest of the group is apparent to all, and makes me think this group has the potential for staying together long term – unlike so many other groups that tend to fall apart.

The Tahoe Tribe has made my time in Tahoe better and better. And, I’m so appreciative that even though I am currently part-time in Tahoe, I am loved and accepted by the group!

How do you stay happy & healthy each day?

  • I always walk 10k steps per day at a minimum, and love to cycle, kayak, hike, ski, and snowshoe
  • I love getting together with friends and doing all of the above outdoor activities (and of course, dancing, eating, drinking!)
  • Helping out my friends whenever they need it

Any tips for those who are curious about living happier, healthier lives?

One of the best ways to live healthier, happier lives is to work with others who have the same vision. Join a group with similar goals and communicate with them regularly.

Want to lose weight? Trade recipes, work out together, and check in regularly with your partner to keep each other on track. Identify your goal and track your progress.

Want to walk 5 miles a day? Get a fitness tracker, and a walking buddy (for accountability) and record your successes, and your failures, so you know when you are doing well, and what you need to do better!

Walking Changes America—Creating Happier, Healthier Lives, One Step at a Time

Walking Changes America—Creating Happier, Healthier Lives, One Step at a Time

I am so excited to share with you my vision for the 2018 Walking With America Campaign. I believe that the walk from Key West, Florida to San Francisco, CA will go down in history as one of the greatest demonstrations of equality and peace, spreading happiness, acceptance, self-love, and love for others from one corner of the nation to the other.

America is hurting, and there are countless symptoms emerging at every turn. As far back as I can remember, we have encountered hate and war on a daily basis, not only on a national scale, but individually. Families across America are feeling the effects of this negativity, and it pains me to the core of my very being.

People are starving for peace, love, and connection—and I believe that my path through America will allow the entire country to participate in many diverse ways. I ask everyone to walk together and show how we can love, instead of jumping to hate.

Many leaders before me have paved the way for peaceful, loving demonstrations of unity and community—I can only hope to add my own small, meaningful contribution to the many programs, projects, and movements that have changed and continue to change lives.

This is my call to you, Dearest Walker Friend—to join me and WALK WITH ME, because Walking Changes America!

Whether it is our current economic or political pains that are pushing the smiles off our faces, or the worry, hate, and fear of the unknown that forces our heads down and keeps our shoulders slumped, know that this walk exists as an antidote.

If it is the lack of self-love, inspiration, support, motivation, community, or anything keeping us from living our best lives, know that I am reaching out with open, gentle, and loving arms.

If we feel stuck on insecurities, or frozen from the sense of loneliness or sadness around relationships within our families or friends, walking will release those negative bonds and offer a new, breathtaking freedom.

If we feel lost within our career, drowning from financial stress, or overwhelmed by the constant noise of social media and blue screens, walking provides that beautiful, desperately-needed respite.

No matter what is keeping us down, holding us back, and preventing us from fully living happy days all day long, know that Walking Changes America!

Whether you walk with me physically or every Saturday morning at 9 AM—for the next six months and hopefully, even after— I will feel your support, your kindness, and mostly, your love. In any way you can, I say, LET’S WALK, AMERICA!

#walkwithme and become a part of the movement, contribute an integral piece of my ultimate vision: to walk together, share a moment of our lives together, and come to happier, healthier understanding of our world.

Walking With America Benefits—Improve Your Happiness, Your Health, & Your Community

Walking With America Benefits—Improve Your Happiness, Your Health, & Your Community

Since I started long distance walking, traveling anywhere between 3 – 23 miles a day, my life has significantly and wonderfully improved. I can confidently say that the individual worlds of my loved ones have improved right along with it, and I believe that even the universe has gotten a whole bunch brighter.

Without walking, I would undoubtedly be different. The way that I interact with the people around me, the way that I accept challenges, and how I view my daily circumstances would all have a duller, darker edge. These benefits of walking are right out there, hanging within reach, waiting for you to take them for yourself!

No matter how insignificant or distant the connection may be

We are all connected to each other. The premise of how Walking Changes America is simple: alter the way that you interact with the people around you, and in turn, their lives will experience their own unique transformation.

By changing the way that each person interacts with their circle—whether it’s through a smile, a friendly chat, or by walking a few steps together—this ripple effect gathers strength, breaking the threshold and letting happiness, joy, acceptance, and peace burst through.

This is why I am so passionate about people getting out to walk—the possibilities for change are truly endless! You have no idea how many wonderful, beautiful things are in store for you and for everyone around you once you begin walking. It will start with small steps, of course—but all the greatest movements do!

Of course, walking to generate happiness and health is nothing new. People all around the world, of all different races, backgrounds, health conditions, personalities, and beliefs have experienced wonderful benefits from regular walking.

In fact, many doctors and other health professionals cite moderate physical activity,
including walking, as a “magic pill” for excellent health. Even better, there is a broad range of individual and community benefits that accrue when people walk more often and when communities are designed to make walking safe, enjoyable, and convenient.

Heidi Simon, Partnerships & Communications Director at AmericaWalks.org, explains these benefits, saying:

Walking improves individual health and wellness, strengthens economies, and provides opportunities to access school, work, and play. It’s also a great way to connect with friends and families, explore your community, and have fun while staying physically active.

Still not convinced? Check out the sections below for a ton of well-researched and
documented benefits that can be had by taking a few steps each day!

The below “Benefits of Walking” come from www.AmericaWalks.org, the 20-year- long organization that is getting America moving.

Safety Benefits: Walkable neighborhoods have much lower rates of traffic fatalities – for both pedestrians and motorists – compared with automobile-oriented areas. Download in Spanish

Health Benefits: Fewer than 50% of Americans meet the minimum guidelines for moderate physical activity – walking is the easiest and most affordable way to correct this problem. Download in Spanish

Social Equity Benefits: Low-income families are more reliant on walking for essential journeys than the middle class, and yet low-cost housing is often located in the most car-dependent places – increasing community walkability improves home values, residents’ health, and local air quality.

Environmental Benefits: Transportation is responsible for one third of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions – converting short driving journeys to walking journeys is reducing this impact significantly.

Transportation Benefits: One quarter of all trips in the U.S. are 1 mile or less, and yet most of these trips are taken by car – increasing walking reduces traffic congestion and the cost of road maintenance. Download in Spanish

Economic Benefits: The average household cost to own and operate one car in the U.S. is $9,000 per year – walkable neighborhoods allow families to own fewer cars and save money. Download in Spanish

WALK WITH ME!

Walking has changed, is changing, and will continue to change lives across the country. It has certainly changed my life in EPIC ways that I never dreamt were possible—and this is exactly what I want for you, for your community, for our country, and (dare I say it?) even for our world.

With all the good that can come from walking, why wouldn’t you take a chance that your life could be transformed, that your community could breathe new life, or that America might stand a little taller? Why not roll the dice on sparking a ripple of happiness and positivity across the world?

Why not let walking change America, one step at a time? Why not WALK WITH ME, today?!
