On the Road with Sheryl, Ruben, and Xavier

This week, we had the pleasure of running into another walker, Jeanie Grzybowski! With the help of her husband, Joe, she plans on walking 1,800 miles in 116 days on her way from Key West to Maine, dodging traffic along the East Coast Greenway (the nation’s longest biking and walking route).

We were so happy to be able to share some of our Theramu with Jeanie, as she was suffering terribly from blisters (and we’ve all been in THOSE painful shoes)! They were such sweet people, and an amazing team–Joe drops Jeanie off, parks the car five miles ahead, rides his back back, and walks the rest with her each day.

It was wonderful to connect with them, and we wish them all the best of luck on the rest of their EPIC journey!

Message From Sheryl – Highlight of the Week

First and foremost, this week is about gratitude. I am so thankful to have the support of each and every one of you while I am on this journey!

As we near the marker for the first full month of Walking With America, it’-s finally starting to sink in that this is reality–and truth be told, pushing Bobbie from highways to side roads, fighting against blisters, avoiding sunburn, and sometimes not even knowing where our next bathroom or drink of water will be can be stressful, to say the least!

With that said, I know that this would all be IMPOSSIBLE without the hard work, love, support, and friendship of this wonderful network. Thank you for every text, phone call, email, and social media post–you are all wonderful, and I am so grateful to count you all as my Dear Walker Friends along this journey. I believe in Walking With America; I believe in our mission to help our nation achieve a better state of health and happiness; and most of all, I believe in each and every one of you!

Asking people to change their daily attitude towards physical and mental health can be tough. Believe, me I know that carving out time in our hectic schedules to walk isn’t always easy, especially if you don’t already have an exercise routine. They say it takes 21 days to form a habit, and we’re out to help everyone in America develop healthier habits!

Luckily, when it comes to improving your health and happiness through walking, you don’t have to set out on a 6-month journey (unless , of course, you are crazy in the BEST way possible)! The great thing about walking is that you can take it slow and build from there.

Saturday Mornings – Walk With Me!

Because Walking With America seeks to help people create happier, healthier lives, part of our initiative is making walking a part of our regular routine. In the true Walking With America spirit, I want to remind you that you are all invited to join me me in my weekly Saturday morning walk!

#walkwithme as a way to shake off the last remnants of sleep, after your first cup of coffee, when the dog starts whining, or whenever works best for your schedule! Our ultimate goal is to get everyone in the nation walking together and committed to their health and happiness.

No matter when you walk, don’t forget to wear yellow and to invite a friend or family member to join you! I can’t wait to hear your stories, share in your successes, and see your Saturday morning photos and videos using the social media links below!

Walking With America (WWA) is Sheryl Lynn’s six-month mission of walking from Key West, FL to San Francisco, CA, all while encouraging others to take their health and happiness into their own hands.

At its core, WWA is about creating healthier, happier individuals through personal accountability, empowerment, and community. Sheryl’s feel-good community of walkers offers a message of support and a call to action, unlocking health and happiness one step at a time–and even better, sharing it with those around you.

My name is Sheryl Lynn, and I invite you all to #walkwithme–become a part of the movement and contribute an integral piece of my ultimate vision: to walk together, share a moment of our lives, and come to a happier, healthier understanding of our world.

10 Ways to Get Off the Couch, Get Outside, and Get Moving!

10 Ways to Get Off the Couch, Get Outside, and Get Moving!

Let’s face it, America—it’s easy to fall into inactivity from time to time. I’ll admit, even I have found myself tempted to relax on the couch and watch a few hours of television to unwind instead of getting outside and moving!

In fact, according to HHS.gov, less than 5 percent of Americans participate in 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Even worse, only 1 in 3 adults get the recommended amount of physical activity each week.

Getting up from the couch, getting outside, and moving your body is SO important to your physical, mental, and emotional health. Fresh air and time spent outside improves circulation, fights against heart disease, releases endorphins, and much, much more.

Of course, carving time out of your day isn’t always easy—but I promise you, it IS possible, and in more ways than you realize! Here are 10 EASY and FUN ways that you can start your own personal journey towards a healthier, happier you!

  1. Walk with a friend

Whether you’re walking through the park, along your neighborhood sidewalk, or to the store, bringing someone along for the ride is a great way to stay motivated!

  2. Bring your dog along

Dog parents have a unique advantage when it comes to getting outside and walking. Not only is it a great way to keep your dog healthy and well-socialized, but daily walks also provide a great opportunity to strengthen the bond between you and your fur baby!

  3. Get a Fit Bit

For some people, tracking daily steps is a great way to get a visual representation of progress and keep themselves accountable. Start small, and build your way up to 10,000 steps (approximately 5 miles)

  4. Walk to work

While this won’t apply to everyone, it’s worth considering whether walking to work is an option. Walking is a great way to wake up your mind and your body—you may even find that you get some great brainstorming and meditation during your morning walk to work!

  5. Take a 10-minute walking break at lunch

Not all of us have the luxury of living near our work, but finding an excuse to walk during your lunch break is something that we can all afford to do! Whether it’s getting a coffee, grabbing a snack, or simply walking a few laps around the parking lot, spending 10 minutes outside and walking is a great way to break up your day.

  6. Look for fun places to walk

If walking isn’t already part of your daily routine, changing your scenery can be a great way to spark motivation! A nearby park, hiking trail, creek, lake, or river are all great places to enjoy the scenery and get a little bit of exercise in.

  7. Listen to an audio book

Reading is a luxury that many of us forget to make time for in our days, particularly as work schedules become more hectic. Consider downloading an audio book to listen to while walking, and you can kill two birds with one stone! (If you’re more of a podcast person, this is also a great time to catch up on new episodes.)

  8. Schedule weekly catch-up phone calls during your walk

This is one of my favorite ways to stay in touch with friends and family members that live across the country. Give someone that you haven’t spoken to in a while a call while walking!

  9. Park in the back of the parking lot

We all have to go shopping at some point or another, and we’re all guilty of circling around to find the closest spot. Instead, make a conscious effort to park as far back as possible—chances are that you won’t have to fight for a spot, so you’ll get the added benefit of saving your car from dings!

  10. Carry shopping bags in one at a time

I know, this may seem silly, but stick with me—rather than load up each arm with as many plastic bags as possible, why not take a few extra minutes and take each one in at a time? It’s a great way to get a few extra steps in—bonus points if you live on the second or third floor!

What are your favorite ways to get up and get moving? Have a great idea that you don’t see listed here? Don’t be shy—find me on Instagram or Facebook and let the Walking With America community know! I would love to hear your personal stories and share in all of your successes!

As always, don’t forget to #walkwithme every Saturday morning as we all share a moment of our lives together and come to a happier, healthier understanding of our world.

On the Road with WWA—Xavier Berney

As Sheryl brings Walking With America across the country, every day brings new opportunities to meet incredible, unique, and inspiring people along the way.

Uniquely, this “On the Road” segment introduces a brand-new friend, team member, and walker. Xavier is joining Sheryl on her epic journey, supporting the mission of WWA with every step—to live happier, healthier lives.

Walking With America is both proud and pleased to welcome Xavier Berney to our ever-growing network of support for a healthier, happier nation! Xavier has joined Sheryl as she continues on her path across America, helping those they meet along the way to improve their overall well-being and quality of life.

An Alabama native, Xavier always had an outgoing and ambitious streak. Raised by a single mother, his comfort zone has always been in traveling the country and surrounding himself with strong, inspirational people.

On a chance meeting in a laundromat, Xavier and Ruben crossed paths and briefly chatted about a woman who was walking from Key West. As Xavier says, “I felt ambition just with him telling me about it—it was new energy, something to believe in. It was like the West Coast was coming to Florida.”

Xavier & Sheryl–Taking Florida by storm!

Even though he left without getting Ruben or Sheryl’s information, two days later, it was fate that Xavier passed right by Sheryl while on his way to South Beach to meet up with friends.

From a morning bike ride, making small talk in a laundromat, making spontaneous plans in South Beach, and even missing the bus, timing and fate have been underlying forces from the beginning.

As Xavier puts it, “I literally met Sheryl off the words of somebody—and three days later, she appeared. I believed in everything she was doing, we talked for an hour, and I quit my job on the spot!”

What made you want to join WWA?

When I first met Sheryl, everything was just so brand new to us! We started walking and we built a great relationship that day, and it was beautiful. I literally quit my job right then and there!

I told the guy who I was working for at the time that I knew the job that I had wasn’t meant to be. It was like I knew that something spiritual and powerful was going to come up, and that I was going to do what I was meant to.

In fact, before Sheryl walked up the street, I even ran up to the bus with my bike, and they pulled away right before I got there. I missed my bus perfectly—I didn’t have any choice but to wait. Everything was pulling together so that we could meet—it was incredible!

We were two people out of 170,000 in downtown Miami who didn’t know anything about each other, and by fate, we end up connecting.

What did your family and friends have to say about your decision to join WWA?

A couple friends said it’s crazy, but they are so inspired—they always knew that I had that adventurous spirit. They’re proud and happy—my friends, family, they all think that it is so cool. In fact, my whole family is planning on visiting when we pass through Atlanta!

Do you have any personal goals that you are hoping to achieve with WWA?

Spiritually, I’m hoping to become much stronger, to speak positively, and to follow through with that. Sheryl and I are creating our own language where we are positive—it’s not how, it’s WHEN. We’re on a powerful frequency.

Personally, I want to inspire communities around America, with the goal of setting up health events and creating a solid network to give back to the public. I want to set up places where people can have cookouts, organize free blood pressure screenings, and just focus on giving back to their communities in a beautiful way.

Welcome to Walking With America, Xavier!

On the Road with WWA—Ruben Ortega

As Sheryl brings Walking With America across the country, every day brings new opportunities to meet incredible, unique, and inspiring people along the way.

Uniquely, this “On the Road” segment introduces a brand-new friend, team member, and walker. Ruben Ortega is joining Sheryl on her epic journey, supporting the mission of WWA with every step—to live happier, healthier lives.

Walking With America is both proud and pleased to welcome Ruben Ortega to our ever-growing network of support for a healthier, happier nation!

Ruben has joined Sheryl as she continues on her path across America, sharing every step and helping those they meet along the way to improve their overall well-being and quality of life.

A sales representative for Theramu—a safe, all-natural alternative for pain management—Ruben first met Sheryl as a business partnership, joining forces with Burst Management to promote healthy, natural products.

As luck would have it, Ruben happened to be visiting South Florida and stopped to replenish Sheryl’s supply of Theramu. It was in that moment that Sheryl and Ruben both came to the same realization—why not walk together?

Sheryl & Ruben–Bringing WWA across Florida!

As Ruben describes it, “It was almost like she wanted me to walk with her but didn’t ask. And I wanted to walk with her, but I didn’t ask!” One week later, Ruben found himself walking right beside Sheryl as an integral part of the Walking With America movement.

“It’s such a big deal that I’m walking across the country with her! Both of us are are excited about it,” he says.

We caught up with Ruben during a mid-day walking break, resting from the Florida sun beneath the shade of a palm tree. When asked if he felt like he was ‘living the dream,’ Ruben laughed and said, “Living the dream—what’s great is that this is reality! I don’t have to dream, that’s what’s cool!”

What made you want to join WWA?

When Sheryl first told me that she was walking through America, I was like “What?!” A good friend of mine actually did something similar, biking from Maryland to Key West and then Seattle to San Diego, which I always thought was really cool.

Ever since Sheryl told me about her walk, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I love the idea of motivating people to just get up and do something—to just be healthy, live a healthy lifestyle. Get up and walk—that’s it, it’s so simple!

What did your family and friends have to say about your decision to join WWA?

Well, the first thing you have to know about my brother is that he has a rule with me—any ideas that I give him, his first answer is always “No” because I’m a salesman!

Of course, once he heard me talk about it—and when he saw how excited my boss at Theramu was about the possibility of taking the product out on the road—he was like “Wow, that’s great!” My brother is very supportive—he’s always checking in on me, seeing how many miles we have done, and making sure that I have everything that I need.

How long do you plan on walking with Sheryl?

I’m planning to walk with Sheryl the whole way through—after all, the whole point is to finish! Naturally, Sheryl has to see if she likes me being around, and it’s all so new that there’s a whole lot of uncertainty there as to whether the chemistry will work well.

So far, it has been awesome! There is an opportunity to keep working while walking—I can do what I’m doing already, but also do WWA. I love to meet new people and go new places—plus, it’s also going to get me into great physical shape!

Do you have any personal goals that you are hoping to achieve with WWA?

For me, definitely treating my body as a temple—being healthy is a huge thing. My goal is to be healthy, so physical fitness is a big draw. But there are so many other great reasons for anyone to get behind this—it’s not just for weight loss, it’s for affecting other people’s lives and changing communities.

For me, this walk also has perfect timing. I’m starting a new life and a new career—it’s a great transition period. I’m finding out who I am. Any time you go on a journey like this, something is going to happen to you—you just have to be open to it!

Welcome to the WWA team, Ruben!

Tahoe Tribe Series—Kelley Posada, The Organizer

The Tahoe Tribe blog series features a group of women that are dedicated to supporting success in each other’s personal and professional lives. Each and every woman is remarkable in their own way, offering unique—and absolutely invaluable— contributions to each other and to the WWA movement as a whole.

As a unit and as individuals, these ladies both redefine and exemplify the true meanings of support, love, sisterhood, and friendship. In short, Walking With America simply would not be possible without them!

As “The Organizer,” Kelley certainly has plenty of opportunities to help keep WWA running smoothly! Whether its maintaining crew documents, mapping miles, tracking dates for press release stops, or keeping track of expenses and donation values, Kelley is there with patience, an analytical mindset, and a keen eye for detail.

For Kelley, living a healthy and happy lifestyle and being a part of the Tahoe Tribe has brought powerful lessons in how to spark personal growth. As she says, “If you want a positive life, hang out with positive people who inspire you!”

What does Walking With America mean to you?

When I saw Sheryl’s passion to get the word out to encourage people just to get outside and walk, it reminded me of my own love of walking in nature.  I wanted to be part of something simple and healthy for all.

How did you & Sheryl meet?

I met Sheryl through a Green Apron MeetUp group a few years ago.  One night, we decided to do a potluck and play games.  One of the highlights was playing the game ‘Taboo’.  If you’re not familiar with the game, the intention is to give clues your team to figure out the word on each card.  The trick is to NOT say 5 of the top clues on each card, all within a short amount of time.

It truly got the whole group laughing and opened the door to connecting with the group further!

How do you stay happy & healthy each day?

We all have an inner voice— I just try to make sure I listen to the empowering one!  I’m a glass-half-full kind of girl and look at the world from a curiosity point of view and try to see other perspectives.  This allows me to connect with others in a way that brings the conversation up.

Spiritually, I connect with God/Source, my Guides, Angels, and nature realms for their assistance with divine guidance, questions, grounding, and support.  When I can, I love to take my dog for a walk in the forest and connect with Mother Nature.

At the end of the day, I try to tap into self-care by taking a nice warm sea salt bath with essential oils.  This prepares me for a great night’s sleep so I can be prepared for a healthy next day.

Any tips for those who are curious about living happier, healthier lives?

Just getting outside to walk will get the blood pumping along with some fresh air. This will purge toxins for a healthier you!  All it takes is a small step to get outside the door.

Walk a little bit and then some more until you’re hooked.  Perhaps getting outside will encourage others to join in as well—and you might even experience a more positive outlook on life!

Tahoe Tribe Series—Rebecca Gold, The Coach

The Tahoe Tribe blog series features a group of women that are dedicated to supporting success in each other’s personal and professional lives. Each and every woman is remarkable in their own way, offering unique—and absolutely invaluable— contributions to each other and to the WWA movement as a whole.

As a unit and as individuals, these ladies both redefine and exemplify the true meanings of support, love, sisterhood, and friendship. In short, Walking With America simply would not be possible without them!

As “The Coach,” Rebecca has been behind the scenes since the beginning, helping Sheryl focus on her outcome and supporting her in her first steps towards the wild adventure that is Walking With America.

Throughout the walk, Rebecca’s role will continue to be helping Sheryl focus and accomplish her goals, using her background as a business coach and a life coach to fuel the dream of spreading happiness and healthy living across America!

What does Walking With America mean to you?

My thought with WWA has always been how can we take this dream and use it to make a difference and to help others.  As a business coach for a living and a certified life coach, I exist in this world to make a difference.

WWA is yet another avenue I can reach out and help others through connection–to get out and walk with Sheryl, connect, live, be happy, healthy and get outside!

How would you describe Walking With America to someone you just met?

It’s about getting outside and connecting with one another.  Getting away from social media, getting away from television, being outdoors, and enjoying walking together and talking with one another.

How would you describe the Tahoe Tribe to someone you just met?

Sheryl and I formed the Tahoe Tribe together when we decided to snowshoe through “Snowmageddon” one late afternoon.  As we sank, even with snowshoes knee-deep into exhaustion, we decided to form a women’s group based on setting goals, supporting each other to stay on track towards those goals, and celebrating each other.

We wanted to choose a set of women we felt would truly fully support one another without question and with only love and light.  We have only been amazed and blessed by what the Tribe has become.  Something truly special has evolved!

What does the Tahoe Tribe mean to you?

Oh gosh!  I honestly say after having the tribe in my life I couldn’t live without these ladies.  I love them—and I mean, really love them!  I know I have this group of women in my life I can count on.  As a single woman with no local family and not much family at all,  I have no worries because the Tribe is in my life.  That is huge.

The Tribe is beautiful– it is love, it is friendship, it is family. And of course, the biggest bonus is that the Tribe is absolute fun!

On the Road with WWA—Shayna Frasco-Rose, RAC Athletic Club

As Sheryl brings Walking With America across the country, every day brings new opportunities to meet incredible, unique, and inspiring people along the way.

Our “On the Road” series features brief interviews and unique insights from these new-found friends, team members, and networks across the nation that support the mission of WWA—to live happier, healthier lives.

With a passion for personal fitness and health, Shayna Frasco-Rose, owner of The Rose Athletic Club (RAC) is a natural reflection of the Walking With America vision!

Happily married with two young boys, Shayna founded The Rose Athletic Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, five years ago with one goal in mind—to do what she loved, and to help children and families do the same. Having grown up with physical fitness as a central part of life (her father and uncles were all body builders), a passion for living a healthy life was instilled early on. As she says,

“I’m big on kid’s programs because I feel that schools continue to have less physical activity. I even teach at my son’s preschool [sports]. I like bringing that awareness there at a young age, that’s kind of how I grew up and it stuck with me for the rest of my life!”

The Rose Family

As both a new mother and a new Florida resident, Shayna recognized the importance of encouraging children to participate in physical health. Today, along with a wide variety of children and adult-oriented fitness programs, the RAC Athletic Club features Mommy & Me classes, encouraging mothers to safely and confidently make physical fitness fun, interactive, and fulfilling.

With a strong focus on supporting physical activity and health within the family dynamic, Shayna is a perfect fit for the Walking With America cause, and a wonderful friend to have connected with along the way.

As she says, “America is families; it’s real people. It’s kind of what intrigued me about Walking with America—it’s all about real people with real goals!”

(We couldn’t have said it any better, Shayna!)

Our Newest Florida Host—Shayna Frasco-Rose & The RAC

We are so pleased to announce that in April, Shayna will be one of our Florida hosts for Walking With America. She will be helping to build and support a community of happy, healthy walkers in Port St. Lucie!

From Key West to Jacksonville—Come Walk With Me, Florida!

Can you feel that change in the air? April has officially begun, bringing sunshine, flower buds, rain showers, and—if you live in Florida—spring marks the first segment on my 6-month trek of Walking With America!

As I cross from Key West into Miami

from the Keys Highway, pushing Bobbie (my yellow stroller, of course) and basking in the sun, I can’t help but stop and consider just how lucky I am. This journey is the EPIC trip of a lifetime—and even with the beginnings of blisters and the hint of a sunburn, I couldn’t be happier to finally be in Florida!

Resting my feet before pushing Bobbie up another hill—What a great workout!

While Florida is certainly no stranger to natural beauty—and all the outdoor recreation that comes with it—the health and happiness of our nation is declining, even in the sunniest of states:

  • Growing rates of heart disease and diabetes have brought Miami-Dade county into a growing public health crisis, with heart disease as the leading cause of death in 2015
  • It is estimated that over 2.4 million Florida residents have diabetes, with over 5.8 million suffering from prediabetes
  • Florida is ranked 50th in the nation for mental health funding—a sobering statistic when considering that approximately 660,000 adults and 181,000 children across the state live with serious mental illness

Statistics like these are exactly what Walking With America seeks to cure through every smile, laugh, step, and connection made. Increase your health and happiness, and you can start to change the health and happiness of everyone around you!

So, Floridians—grab your sunglasses, put on a pair of sneakers, wear something yellow, and come join me for a few steps and an H3 event as we let the emotional, mental, and physical benefits of walking spark a truly positive, life-changing chain of events ripple throughout this beautiful state!

Yellow is starting to catch on! So thankful for every new friend along the way

As a unit and as individuals, these ladies both redefine and exemplify the true meanings of support, love, sisterhood, and friendship. In short, Walking With America simply would not be possible without them!

As “The Naturalist,” Sheryl F. brings essential insight and experience on the Great Outdoors—and how to fully enjoy it—to Walking With America.

Over the next six months, Sheryl F. will be assisting Sheryl L. (forming the dynamic duo known as “Sheryl Squared”) with insight and tools for gear, ideas for adventure, tips on local wildlife, and how to stop and appreciate natural beauty along the way.

With the expert guidance of “The Naturalist,” Walking With America can truly accomplish wonderful things, no matter where the trail leads. Who knows—by the end of it all, Sheryl Lynn could become a seasoned pro at spotting the differences between an East Coast Blue Jay and a West Coast Steller’s Jay!

What does Walking With America mean to you?

My career was with the USDA Forest Service before I quit to raise a family, and my degree is in Wildlife Biology & Forestry.  I still participate in activities that are close to my degree and passion – nature!

With that said, the underlying passion and mission of Walking With America is a perfect fit for me. Sheryl a sweetheart, and I believe that you can’t go wrong with getting closer to the outdoors. If you’re going to get addicted to anything, get addicted to nature!

How would you describe the Tahoe Tribe to someone you just met?

Genuine, supportive, caring girlfriends.

How do you stay happy & healthy each day?

Staying happy and healthy each day is easy for me—I live in Lake Tahoe!  I love living where there are more trees than people. I have a gorgeous, big, white Siberian husky who accompanies me on most of my romps in the mountains:  hiking, cross-country skiing, full moon adventures, etc.

Any tips for those who are curious about living happier, healthier lives?

  • Watch more sunsets
  • Take more hikes
  • Get outdoors!
  • Less is more—Downsize whenever possible!
  • Clear away the clutter in your life (this is an ongoing work in progress for me!)
