10 Ways to Get Off the Couch, Get Outside, and Get Moving!

Let’s face it, America—it’s easy to fall into inactivity from time to time. I’ll admit, even I have found myself tempted to relax on the couch and watch a few hours of television to unwind instead of getting outside and moving!

In fact, according to HHS.gov, less than 5 percent of Americans participate in 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Even worse, only 1 in 3 adults get the recommended amount of physical activity each week.

Getting up from the couch, getting outside, and moving your body is SO important to your physical, mental, and emotional health. Fresh air and time spent outside improves circulation, fights against heart disease, releases endorphins, and much, much more.

Of course, carving time out of your day isn’t always easy—but I promise you, it IS possible, and in more ways than you realize! Here are 10 EASY and FUN ways that you can start your own personal journey towards a healthier, happier you!

  1. Walk with a friend

    Whether you’re walking through the park, along your neighborhood sidewalk, or to the store, bringing someone along for the ride is a great way to stay motivated!

  2. Bring your dog along 

    Dog parents have a unique advantage when it comes to getting outside and walking. Not only is it a great way to keep your dog healthy and well-socialized, but daily walks also provide a great opportunity to strengthen the bond between you and your fur baby!

  3. Get a Fit Bit 

    For some people, tracking daily steps is a great way to get a visual representation of progress and keep themselves accountable. Start small, and build your way up to 10,000 steps (approximately 5 miles)

  4. Walk to work 

    While this won’t apply to everyone, it’s worth considering whether walking to work is an option. Walking is a great way to wake up your mind and your body—you may even find that you get some great brainstorming and meditation during your morning walk to work!

  5. Take a 10-minute walking break at lunch 

    Not all of us have the luxury of living near our work, but finding an excuse to walk during your lunch break is something that we can all afford to do! Whether it’s getting a coffee, grabbing a snack, or simply walking a few laps around the parking lot, spending 10 minutes outside and walking is a great way to break up your day.

  6. Look for fun places to walk 

    If walking isn’t already part of your daily routine, changing your scenery can be a great way to spark motivation! A nearby park, hiking trail, creek, lake, or river are all great places to enjoy the scenery and get a little bit of exercise in.

  7. Listen to an audio book 

    Reading is a luxury that many of us forget to make time for in our days, particularly as work schedules become more hectic. Consider downloading an audio book to listen to while walking, and you can kill two birds with one stone! (If you’re more of a podcast person, this is also a great time to catch up on new episodes.)

  8. Schedule weekly catch-up phone calls during your walk 

    This is one of my favorite ways to stay in touch with friends and family members that live across the country. Give someone that you haven’t spoken to in a while a call while walking!

  9. Park in the back of the parking lot 

    We all have to go shopping at some point or another, and we’re all guilty of circling around to find the closest spot. Instead, make a conscious effort to park as far back as possible—chances are that you won’t have to fight for a spot, so you’ll get the added benefit of saving your car from dings!

  10. Carry shopping bags in one at a time 

    I know, this may seem silly, but stick with me—rather than load up each arm with as many plastic bags as possible, why not take a few extra minutes and take each one in at a time? It’s a great way to get a few extra steps in—bonus points if you live on the second or third floor!

From Key West to Jacksonville—Come Walk With Me, Florida!

Can you feel that change in the air? April has officially begun, bringing sunshine, flower buds, rain showers, and—if you live in Florida—spring marks the first segment on my 6-month trek of Walking With America!

As I cross from Key West into Miami

from the Keys Highway, pushing Bobbie (my yellow stroller, of course) and basking in the sun, I can’t help but stop and consider just how lucky I am. This journey is the EPIC trip of a lifetime—and even with the beginnings of blisters and the hint of a sunburn, I couldn’t be happier to finally be in Florida!

While Florida is certainly no stranger to natural beauty—and all the outdoor recreation that comes with it—the health and happiness of our nation is declining, even in the sunniest of states:

  • Growing rates of heart disease and diabetes have brought Miami-Dade county into a growing public health crisis, with heart disease as the leading cause of death in 2015
  • It is estimated that over 2.4 million Florida residents have diabetes, with over 5.8 million suffering from prediabetes
  • Florida is ranked 50th in the nation for mental health funding—a sobering statistic when considering that approximately 660,000 adults and 181,000 children across the state live with serious mental illness

Statistics like these are exactly what Walking With America seeks to cure through every smile, laugh, step, and connection made. Increase your health and happiness, and you can start to change the health and happiness of everyone around you!

Walking Changes America—Creating Happier, Healthier Lives, One Step at a Time

I am so excited to share with you my vision for the 2018 Walking With America Campaign. I believe that the walk from Key West, Florida to San Francisco, CA will go down in history as one of the greatest demonstrations of equality and peace, spreading happiness, acceptance, self-love, and love for others from one corner of the nation to the other.

America is hurting, and there are countless symptoms emerging at every turn. As far back as I can remember, we have encountered hate and war on a daily basis, not only on a national scale, but individually. Families across America are feeling the effects of this negativity, and it pains me to the core of my very being.

People are starving for peace, love, and connection—and I believe that my path through America will allow the entire country to participate in many diverse ways. I ask everyone to walk together and show how we can love, instead of jumping to hate.

Many leaders before me have paved the way for peaceful, loving demonstrations of unity and community—I can only hope to add my own small, meaningful contribution to the many programs, projects, and movements that have changed and continue to change lives.

This is my call to you, Dearest Walker Friend—to join me and WALK WITH ME, because Walking Changes America!

Whether it is our current economic or political pains that are pushing the smiles off our faces, or the worry, hate, and fear of the unknown that forces our heads down and keeps our shoulders slumped, know that this walk exists as an antidote.

If it is the lack of self-love, inspiration, support, motivation, community, or anything keeping us from living our best lives, know that I am reaching out with open, gentle, and loving arms.

If we feel stuck on insecurities, or frozen from the sense of loneliness or sadness around relationships within our families or friends, walking will release those negative bonds and offer a new, breathtaking freedom.

If we feel lost within our career, drowning from financial stress, or overwhelmed by the constant noise of social media and blue screens, walking provides that beautiful, desperately-needed respite.

Since I started long distance walking, traveling anywhere between 3 – 23 miles a day, my life has significantly and wonderfully improved. I can confidently say that the individual worlds of my loved ones have improved right along with it, and I believe that even the universe has gotten a whole bunch brighter.

Without walking, I would undoubtedly be different. The way that I interact with the people around me, the way that I accept challenges, and how I view my daily circumstances would all have a duller, darker edge. These benefits of walking are right out there, hanging within reach, waiting for you to take them for yourself!

No matter how insignificant or distant the connection may be

We are all connected to each other. The premise of how Walking Changes America is simple: alter the way that you interact with the people around you, and in turn, their lives will experience their own unique transformation.

By changing the way that each person interacts with their circle—whether it’s through a smile, a friendly chat, or by walking a few steps together—this ripple effect gathers strength, breaking the threshold and letting happiness, joy, acceptance, and peace burst through.

This is why I am so passionate about people getting out to walk—the possibilities for change are truly endless! You have no idea how many wonderful, beautiful things are in store for you and for everyone around you once you begin walking. It will start with small steps, of course—but all the greatest movements do!

Of course, walking to generate happiness and health is nothing new. People all around the world, of all different races, backgrounds, health conditions, personalities, and beliefs have experienced wonderful benefits from regular walking.

In fact, many doctors and other health professionals cite moderate physical activity,
including walking, as a “magic pill” for excellent health. Even better, there is a broad range of individual and community benefits that accrue when people walk more often and when communities are designed to make walking safe, enjoyable, and convenient.

My Dearest Walker Friends, I am so pleased to announce that, in exactly 30 days, the long-awaited start to Walking With America will arrive!

While I’ll admit that I’m in a whirlwind of making sure I’ve packed enough Band-Aids and worrying over whether I’ve planned enough Happy Healthy Hours, I’m absolutely loving every minute. With 30 days left to go, the excitement, love, and support from family, friends, and the national community for Walking With America is just astounding.

Planning this trip has been—and continues to be—a truly epic experience. This journey is my answer to that pestering, unsettling feeling of desperately wanting to help spread love and acceptance, but not knowing exactly how. After all, who am I to think that I can make a difference—I’m just one person!

But our nation’s past and present has shown us that one person is all we need to spark change. I love to walk, and walking is an activity that many of us can share, regardless of our personal beliefs, our upbringing, our careers, or our identifying communities.

My Dearest Walker Friend,

I will be adding a few entries here as I get prepared physically. emotionally, spiritually and mentally to walk, walk and walk some more!

Today is the day to begin to seriously pay attention seriously to my nutrition and exercise habits, again.  I am not quite sure why I am asleep on this one, again! I have been reading other #walkacrossamerica stories and I am feeling a little pressure to be in better shape.  It is so important to feel well and be strong, as Walking With America will require much effort.  I think I have let a part of me pay less attention to this as it has been so exciting planning the Walking With America events.  There have been many lunches and dinners and celebrations with cocktails, all of which are need I need to back off for a little bit.

January 17, 2018.
Exactly 1 month to the Official Kickoff Launch in Tahoe, set for February 17, 2018. Today I put the wine and whiskey away, already made my strawberry protein shake with a scoop of Elliots Nut Butters, a chilled class of Zenify for focus and stress relief, a liter of Essence pH10 Water and my Garcinia Cambogia for hunger control.   I have my leg weights on and lifting weights as soon as I am done with this entry.  Thanks for listening~~~ 🙂 What are you doing today to improve your health and fitness?

Later, I will be walking to a friends house to pick up her stroller.  It is not being used at the moment so I am going to use it for training.  I will put some rocks to it and see how easy it is to push, then add more rocks and push it some more.

BOBBIE THE STROLLER

BOBBIE THE STROLLER

My Dearest Walker Friend,

Meet Bob the Ironman Duallie Stoller, or as I like to call her, Bobbie! She’s already a whopping 34 pounds and I have not even put anything in her yet!

I found her on Craigslist from her funny owner, Rob.  Rob told me that he should have been in the stroller business because he purchased a dozen strollers for his wife and he could just not get the right one no matter how he tried. He had to keep taking them back to the store. Lucky for me, he sold this one online.  I am not sure if Rob’s wife did not like Bobbi because of her color or what the issue was with this one, but regardless, it was exactly what I was looking for. It’s all good because I wanted the yellow one.   Bobbie is brand new out of the box and I got her for quite a discount.

Rob and Bobbie are in Venice, Florida at the moment.  I need to get Bobbie the Stoller over to West Palm Beach by April 1, 2018.  If you have any ideas on transportation, I would love to hear them.

My friend Fergy is coming over to help me gear up and figure out how many things I can put in her.  I know she can handle 100 pounds, but I sure don’t want to push that much stuff up a mountain!

I will need to learn how to change the tires and take care of her properly for 3600 miles.  I likely need to get a few of the accessories, like the weather shield and bar handle for cups and towels and what not.  Walking across the country is going to be interesting in all kinds of ways, so much to learn, but I think Bobbie will make it a lot easier!

100 (Yes, Really!) Reasons to Walk

Let the journey begin! My whole body is itching to go on the road with minimal things, an epic challenge, the journey of a lifetime. Walking from Florida to California for most people may seem daunting, but I bet you have also thought of something epic that you have always wanted to do to. What is stopping you? What other dreams or wishes do you have?  It is time to get off that chair and go after whatever is on your heart. You can do it!

I am so looking forward to meeting many new people and having great experiences as I embark on my plan of Walking With America! Please plan to WALK WITH ME!

Starting in April 2018, the fears will subside, and I will venture out in the world starting in Key West, FL, our southernmost city, to end in San Francisco, CA. This trek of trails and paths and streets and highways may take nearly 6 months to walk. My crew is helping me, and I am so thankful for all the support coming my way.

Many people have asked why? That got me thinking: WHY I am spending so many hours Walking With America?  Why would I turn my life upside down, my family’s life, my business life, and my Tahoe life to start a trek that will be far from a walk in the park?

There is no way to describe an event of this magnitude in just one sentence or even with just ten solid reasons.  The flow of interesting—and maybe a few trivial—reasons kept coming to me as I was out on the trail, you know, walking. The reasons keep coming and I could easily write 1,000, but I think we can agree that 100 is a good start!

 And last, the main reason for walking from Florida to California, reason #100 is to experience more PEACE and JOY—for myself and others.

 

WALK WITH ME

WALK WITH ME

It was a perfect day in Tahoe for an outdoor activity. No snow on the ground, yet we need our umbrellas to keep the rain and sleet off of us.  The little amount of precipitation was enough to get us wet, but it did not matter, after all, we are from Tahoe!  Everything went perfectly to plan.  All of our friends brought friends, they came on time and many even arrived early to get prepared.  Jim and Beth were there to shoot the video so we were all set.  I gave a short little speech and explained a little about Walking With America.  Then I said, “Come on America, Let’s Walk!”

As per previous events, I have done, our very diverse eclectic group were outgoing, excited to meet each other, up for anything and extremely friendly.  There was a ton of fun as everyone disconnected from the phones, and connected to a real human spirit.  It gave me such joy to hear the laughter in the air and the busy curiosity about what we were actually doing.

For a little over a mile and about 1 hour of time, we walked and talked, and talked and walked.  We had families with dogs, and children and friends and fresh air.  It was colorful and bright and fantastic.

We waved to passerby’s as we obviously spread joy to the drivers and passengers in the vehicles. You could tell by the enormous smiles on their faces as well as the many people waived back to us. They did not really know what was going on, but someday they will.

The group stayed together and when we got to the South Lake Tahoe High School corner, we had a surprise hiding behind the rocks at the Tahoe High School wall. But first, I asked everyone to tell us why they thought Walking with America was a good thing.  They said, “It’s so needed.” “It’s fun.” “We are outside living life.” “Fresh air and exercise.” There were many other comments as well.  I then asked everyone to tell me one thing worth celebrating the last 24 hours, which is my usual go-to question for a new group.  Again a diverse set of answers; one woman was getting over an illness, two of them said they had been able to work as a team and had fun doing it.  A gentleman commented on how happy he was for making healthy choices about diet and exercise in the last 24 hours.

All in all, I think the event gave us all a little more of what we need as humans; connection, a sense of belonging, and the time to be part of something bigger than ourselves. Of course, there was love.
